We actively participate in community initiatives from hosting a community wide celebration for Coats For Kids at the Weirton Fairfield Inn and Suites, to hosting our annual visit with Santa Claus at the Fairfield Inn Athens and our epic "Trick Or Treat Spooktacular" at the Hampton Inn Athens.  Other properties support our local animal shelters with stained linens, volunteering to assist the elderly, and supporting various nonprofit groups like the Komen Race for The Cure, Stuart's Opera House, Ohio University, and Rural Action. 

We like to have fun. Our hotels regularly keep things interesting including a week long House Keeping Olympics, special visits by the Ice Cream truck for an afternoon break, and sponsoring teams to play in the annual Ohio Hotel and Lodging Association (OHLA) volleyball tournament to support victims of Human Trafficking. All of our hotels are active and engaged.

Meet Our Team

The SJB Hotel Companies, including SJB Hotels, SJB Properties, SJB Development, and SJB Management Inc. are led by an esteemed management team of above and property level hospitality professionals. Founders, Jack and Sandy Bortle, created a winning, inclusive company culture that is led by company President, Chad Bortle and VP of Operations, Alan Hardway.

Chad Bortle

President, SJB Management Inc.

Chad Bortle has been in the hospitality business for 18 years, serving as SJB's Vice President for Operations for 13 years.

Previous to his work with SJB Management Inc., Chad was an Assistant Vice President with CCS Fundraising, an international fundraising consulting firm, successfully directing capital campaigns that raised over 200 million dollars for various non-profit organizations in Oklahoma, Florida, and California. Chad received a graduate degree from Case Western Reserve University's Mandel Center of Non-Profit Management. He is also a graduate of the University of Dayton with a bachelor's degree in English and History. He currently volunteers with the Ohio Hotel and Lodging Association (OHLA) as the organization's Assistant Vice President.

Chad formerly served as a board member with the Iron Disorders Institute, Rural Action, and The Newark Ice Hockey Association (NIHA). He served as the association's Hockey Director for nine years and as the Licking County United Way's Finance Committee. He currently resides with his family in Granville, Ohio.

Jack Bortle

Managing Member

Jack Bortle graduated from Western Michigan University with a degree in Finance. In 1969 he organized his own insurance agency, Financial Alternatives, which he owned and operated for 23 years.

Financial Alternatives was involved with business and personal financial planning, employee benefit plans, and group health insurance. He earned his CLU and ChFC designations from the American College, Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. In addition to being past president of the Southeast Ohio Life Underwriters Association, Mr. Bortle has also been a member of the Million Dollar Round Table. Fidelity Union Life Insurance Company of Dallas, Texas, named him to their Hall of Fame as an agency manager and a personal producer.

Mr. Bortle serves as Chairman of the Athens County Port Authority and the Athens County Economic Development Council. He is past president of the Athens County Convention and Visitors Bureau and past secretary of the Athens County Community Improvement Corporation. Mr. Bortle also served on the Ohio Hotel & Lodging Association Board.

Alan Hardway

Vice President of Operations

Alan Hardway has been in the hospitality business for over 30 years. Alan is the Vice President of Operations for SJB Management Inc., based in Athens, OH.

Alan enjoys working with the Ohio and West Virginia communities his hotels are located. He attended Paul Smith College in upstate New York. Although growing up in West Virginia originally, his roots are in central New York. Alan currently lives in West Virginia with his wife Janet and has twin girls (27) and a son (19) who attends Marshal University - Huntington. One of Alan's greatest past times is connecting/meeting new people and building relationships.

Sandra Bortle

Secretary/Treasurer

Sandy Bortle earned her B.S. Degree from Western Michigan University and a M.Ed. from Ohio University.
She taught in the Business Department of Hocking College for ten years.  After leaving education, Mrs. Bortle obtained her insurance license and worked as a recruiting coordinator and health/casualty insurance representative for Financial Alternatives. She left that position in February of 1988 to become the General Manager of the Days Inn, Athens, Ohio.  In 1989, she assumed the position of General Manager of the AmeriHost Inn, Athens, Ohio when it opened as the first AmeriHost Inn for the brand that eventually had over 100+ hotels throughout the country. Sandy and Jack built and operated 23 AmeriHost Inn hotels throughout Ohio and West Virginia and were the largest franchisees of the once vibrant brand. in 1992, due to the tremendous growth of SJB Management Inc. Mrs. Bortle began working in corporate management with the company eventually assuming her current position of Secretary and Treasurer while also providing direct Human Resources and hotel operational support to their ever-increasing portfolio.
 
Mrs. Bortle has been an active member of the community serving on the Board of Directors on the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce and as a trustee on the board of the Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges (OFIC). She also formerly served on the boards of the Ohio Hotel & Lodging Association, O'Bleness Memorial Hospital, Bank One, Athens County Convention and Visitors Bureau, and The Athens Foundation. She also worked on the fund-raising committee for Athens County Habitat for Humanity and for the Athens High School Athletic Boosters where she led the initiative to raise funds to install a synthetic track at what is now Joe Burrow Field at Athens High School.

Taryn Weisheit

Regional Support Manager

Taryn Weisheit has been in the hospitality business for ten years.
What started as a couple seasonal jobs working as a housekeeper while on break from university became a career when she moved to Athens, Ohio and began working for SJB Management at the Hampton Inn. From front desk agent to General Manager, Taryn has held many positions within the company and the industry. Prior to that she spent 21 years as a full-time military brat traveling the world with her Air Force father and the rest of the family. Now she's settled down outside Columbus, Ohio where she enjoys reading and renovating her house.
